Department of Population Studies
The Department of Population Studies (DPS) was established in 1989 to manage the Master of Arts (MA) in Demography, which was started in 1987.
It is one of the three Departments that were under the former Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (ISAE), now changed to the School of Statistics and Planning in the College of Business and Management Sciences. The college was a merger between the former Faculty of Economics and Management (FEMA) and the ISAE following the Makerere University Council policy (1998).
Core Activities of the Department
The core activities of the DPS are teaching, research and community engagement. First, the DPS focuses on training the next generation of leaders and to generate and share knowledge in the field of Demography, Population Studies, Reproductive Health and Development in Uganda in particular, Africa and the globe in general.
The training component is achieved through six academic programmes and short courses. The academic programmes include:
- Bachelor of Science in Population Studies;
- Post graduate Diploma in Demography,
- Master of Arts in Demography;
- Master of Arts in Population and Development,
- Master of Science in Population and Reproductive Health;
- PhD in Population Studies.
